A while back we did a study in the book of Judges. It was evident in that study that the Israelites were not truly repentant, even though they "cried out" to the Lord at various times. At least once they wept profusely and lamented. But while such things may accompany repentance, they are not the essence of repentance. In reading through Pilgrim's Progress again I was reminded of this. Bunyan's character, Faithful, engaged with Talkative, who knew much about religion, but denied the power thereof. Faithful pointed out that there is a great difference between crying out against sin and a true abhorrence of it. True repentance is a doctrine few understand. Of the mass of humanity, few are there who will readily admit their mistakes. Still fewer are there who will demonstrate true repentance and seek to correct that which they did wrong. If one really abhors his sin, he will confess and forsake it. If he really honors God in his repentance, he will do all within his power to remove the blot of it through restitution or whatever means of making amends is necessary.
