“When death comes knocking at the door she is always in a hurry and nothing will stop her, not prayer or struggles nor scepters or miters.” -from the classic work Don Quixote

I have been using James Boice's commentary on Genesis through our series in Genesis, and it has been quite extraordinary! Boice never ceases to impress me with his exegetical insights. Case in point, I've just read through his sections on the Genesis 5 genealogy. His gleanings are a rich minefield. I thought I had a good grasp of the text. But his investigation of the text puts my notes to shame! He draws out great lessons on what it means that Seth was born in the likeness of Adam. He ties each Scripture that mentions Enoch together with such profound succinctness. He even has a whole section that deals with Methuselah that is just succulent! | |
What's best is that this is a pastoral/sermonic commentary. That is to say, it doesn't get bogged down with a bunch of technical Hebraic or texual details. It is devotional in nature. It is essentially his sermons, which aim to teach at a layman's level.

This is great news! This article says that There is a huge young, restless, and Reformed movement in the ever exploding Chinese church.
Over the last few months I've encountered the term "Replacement Theology" quite a bit. I have never heard the expression until this past year. Suddenly it seems that it is everywhere. People are saying to me, "You are not a Replacement Theology guy are you?" As if this is some grand heresy that will automatically cause a forfeiture of my opinions from every theological debate.
I've found that people, particularly of a dispensational bent, use it in reference to covenant theology. My purpose here is to help people to understand that the term Replacement Theology is not only derogatory in nature, it is completely wrongheaded.
The idea of Replacement Theology is essentially this: The church of the New Testament replaces (or supercedes) Israel. A dispensationally minded person will then label a covenantal fellow like myself such because he thinks that I see the church as replacing Israel in the plan of God.
This couldn't be farther from the truth! Covenantal people do not think that the church replaces or supercedes Israel. It is our belief that the church is the continuation of Israel. In other words, the church didn't appear out of no where all of a sudden on the Day of Pentecost. It had been there the whole time!
To put it another way, covenantal people like myself believe that the church is synonymous with Israel and has existed ever since the Garden of Eden. Israel was the church in the OT.
This is backed by Scripture. The Greek word "church" is the word ekklesia, which means "assembly." Israel is often called the ekklesia in the Greek translation of the OT. Even in the NT, we see this occur. Looking at Stephen's speak in Acts 7 will show this as he refers to Israel as the church.
Other Scriptures could be cited, but this is enough now to make my point: Covenantal people do not see the church as giving Israel the bump in the schema of God's plan. The church is Israel, always has been and always will be.
If you want to talk about replacement theology, let's look at the dispensational view of Scripture. They are the ones who think that the church has taken the place of Israel!

Here's an interesting item I came across while researching the Demographics of Ashland. If you scroll down, you will see that it says that there are over 6,000 women in the county of Ashland who are in "need of public contraception."
If this source is to be trusted, it means that over ten percent of our population can't control their spending habits or their hormones.
It is bad enough that these people fornicate at will, but it is a whole other form of decadence that they have to get their jollies at someone else's expense.
I do wonder about how realistic these numbers are. How are such things tracked and who does the tracking? I do wonder about a government that would actually want to track such numbers. It can only be for the purposes of gathering more propaganda to create programs to further promote such debauchery.
But let's say that these numbers are true. What does this say about the "World's Headquarters of Nice People?" We are forced to say that every girl needs a boy, which brings your number to approximately 12,000--which is now over 22% of the population. Supposedly, these are only those who are "low income" and unable to purchase their own contraception. So we will have to bump up our numbers significantly to cover those who are economically sound if we want to get a good idea of how many people in this county are out fornicating about.
We could easily say that a third to half of the Ashland County citizenship is involved in illicit sex.
Think about that as you send your daughters off to school and prepare to preach your next sermon.

One of the things we emphasize at Providence Church is the role of the man in the family. We believe that Scripture teaches that God designed the man to be the leader of the home; the foundation upon which a good family is built.
That is why our goal is to have "every man leading and being led." You can see that this is a two fold strategy for building godly homes.
It begins with each of our men daily leading his family in devotions. We recognize that an hour or two at church each week, no matter how important it is, is not going to do much to strengthen the home. A strong family can only be built by men who nurture piety in the home.
Thus, we want our men to gather their wife and kids and spend a little time in God's Word together. We want them reading the Scriptures, discussing it, praying together and/or lifting their voices in songs of praise.
We also want to see our men being led. That is to say, we want our men to be involved in some sort of intentional discipleship so that they may constantly be equipped for their task as leaders. We believe that the key to strong homes is strong men. Therefore we want them involved in some sort of mentorship with other men, a church Bible study, or pastoral staff.
In sum, our philosophy is rather simple: Build the men and let them build their families. No elaborate programs or expensive gimmicks, just good old fashioned discipleship.

The esteemed scholars of one of my previous classes.
I've been asked by a number of homeschool parents if I was going to offer any classes for home schoolers this year. The answer is YES!
I will offer one or two of the following, depending on interest:
If you would like to probe the ins and outs of each class to get a fuller idea, check the descriptions out at my site.
FYI: the basic doctrine class can also be used as a writing class if you would like your child(ren) to have some practice at composition. I will not be teaching composition per se, but I can assign them such if you would like them to have those kinds of exercises (stories, essays, poems, etc).
The classes will only be $10 per family. They will once a week for 12-14 weeks.
Number's 1 & 2 above will be both Jr. & Sr. high levels (grades 6-8 & 9-12). The worldview class will be Sr. high only.

In two weeks our Sunday night Bible study will begin an exciting, new series. The study will be an overview of the Old Testament prophets. The prophets can be quite confusing even for those who have long been committed to regular Bible reading, particularly those minor prophets. This study will help to remove some of the fog by sorting out the themes, context, and structure of the books. We will look at some of the biographical information of each prophet and compliment the general overview of each book with some particular passages from each. If you wish to join us as we dive into the text of Scripture, please feel free! Where: 1010 Chestnut St. When: 6:30 each Sunday night starting on Dec. 2 |
As the Thanksgiving season is upon us, it is good to take a few minutes and reflect upon the supreme benevolence of God. That's why this issue of the Providence newsletter is dedicated to the doctrine of God's Providence! It is entitled, "Not a Chance in the World!"
When it comes to this doctrine theologins usually speak of God's preservation, concurrence, and government. Each of these are dealt with in this issue in such a way as to lead you to the great comfort that this great doctrine affords to the believer.
